Business Analyst - Finance
Location: Leeds - hybrid
Contract: Outside IR35, competitive market rate
Duration: 3 months initially, with a strong chance of extension

The role
We're looking for a Business Analyst with genuine accountancy and finance knowledge to help shape the redevelopment of a core business platform.

This is much more than a BA role where finance is simply the subject matter. You'll need to understand how finance and billing processes actually work, be able to challenge and improve them, and translate that knowledge into what should be built.

The ideal background is someone who has worked in FinTech or a technology-led finance environment, with hands-on exposure to areas such as Stripe, bank feeds, bank integrations and modernising accountancy processes. It's the ability to shape how these processes should work in a new platform that's particularly important.

You'll also need to be actively using AI in your day to day work - both to improve your own productivity and to help shape better outputs and outcomes.

Alongside the finance knowledge, you'll be working closely with an Engineering team building bespoke software, so experience working with developers to take ambiguous business problems through discovery, requirements and into delivery is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Lead discovery sessions and workshops with Finance, Credit Control and wider business stakeholders.
  • Understand existing finance, accounting and billing processes and identify opportunities to improve or modernise them.
  • Shape how Finance & Billing processes should work within a new bespoke platform.
  • Translate complex business processes and rules into clear, structured requirements for Engineering.
  • Work closely with an Engineering squad and maintain hands-on ownership of the backlog.
  • Analyse processes covering orders, billing, invoicing, disputes, credit calculations and associated data.
  • Identify gaps, dependencies and risks, helping the team prioritise what needs to be built.
  • Challenge existing processes where appropriate rather than simply documenting the current state.
  • Support requirements through development and delivery, working closely with software engineers.
  • Use AI actively in day-to-day BA work to improve productivity, quality and outcomes.
  • Work confidently with senior stakeholders and provide challenge where required.

Requirements:

Accountancy & Finance - essential

  • Strong, hands-on knowledge of accountancy, finance and billing processes - not simply general exposure to a finance environment/department.
  • Ideally experience within FinTech or a technology led finance environment.
  • Practical exposure to modern finance tooling and processes such as Stripe, bank feeds, bank integrations and payment/billing platforms.
  • Experience of shaping or modernising accountancy and finance processes, rather than purely documenting or supporting existing processes.
  • Strong understanding of areas such as invoicing, billing, credits, disputes, payments and the relationship between orders, finance and data.

AI - essential

  • Actively uses AI day to day to improve personal productivity and the quality of work.
  • Able to demonstrate AI use to influence, shape or improve outputs and outcomes, rather than simply having an awareness of AI tools.

Bespoke software delivery - essential

  • Proven experience working alongside software engineers/developers to build bespoke or custom software.
  • Comfortable working in an Engineering environment where requirements are shaped collaboratively through discovery, development and delivery.
  • Experience owning or managing a product backlog alongside an Engineering team.
  • Able to take ambiguity and turn it into clear, actionable requirements.

Other

  • Strong requirements gathering and discovery workshop experience.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including confidence working with senior stakeholders.
  • Pragmatic approach to prioritisation, dependencies and delivery.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.
