Job Title: Platform Engineering Manager
Location: Remote
Salary: £55,000 - £74,000 + exceptional pension + package
Why Apply?
I'm working with a national public sector regulator. They're looking for a Platform Engineering Manager to lead the team behind the cloud platform that supports all of their internal and external digital services. Their work has a real impact on people's lives across the UK, so this is a genuine tech-for-good role and a chance to make a real difference.
The organisation has recently finished a major, government-backed investment in its IT platform and moved its services to Microsoft Azure. You'll set the technical direction for that platform and lead a team of mostly senior platform engineers. This is a technical leadership role, not a heavy people-management one, and there's scope to grow into line management.
They're a genuinely people-centric organisation that values its staff and offers a true work-life balance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of platform engineers to design, build, test and maintain the Azure infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines behind the organisation's digital services.
- Set the technical direction for the platform and guide the team's technical work.
- Build and improve deployment pipelines, driving efficiency through automation.
- Make sure security, stability and capacity are built into how services are developed and deployed.
- Champion a DevOps culture, encouraging close collaboration between product, engineering and operational teams.
- Oversee backup and disaster recovery strategies so services can be recovered in the event of an incident.
- Coach and mentor engineers, and set standards and best practice across the service lifecycle.
- Work with stakeholders across the business and explain technical concepts in clear, business-focused language.
Key Requirements
- A background in DevOps, platform engineering, cloud engineering or SRE. An infrastructure background is also welcome, provided you have strong cloud experience.
- Experience leading or mentoring a team of technical engineers.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure.
- Experience building and optimising CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Bicep or Terraform.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style for a range of stakeholders.
Desirable
- Public sector experience
- Docker and containerisation in production environments
- Scripting experience, such as PowerShell, Python or Bash
- Large-scale cloud migrations
- Database ownership and disaster recovery experience
- Monitoring, logging and alerting tools
What's in it for me?
- A salary of £55,000 - £74,000.
- An additional £7,500 allowance and a £600 per year home-working allowance.
- A defined benefit pension through the NHS Pension Scheme, equivalent to the old final salary schemes, with the employer contributing around 14% of your salary.
- 27 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, rising to 32.5 days with service.
- Generous family-friendly policies, including 26 weeks' maternity or adoption leave at full pay.
- Wellbeing support, including free counselling and Headspace.
- A secure, permanent role in a stable public sector organisation.
- Remote working.
- A supportive, people-centric culture with a genuine focus on work-life balance.
- Technical leadership of a modern Azure platform, with room to progress into line management.
